Climate

Pontotoc County is 440 feet above sea level. The temperatures are mild in the winter with an average of 41 degrees in January and warm in the summer with 81 degrees being the average in July. Estimated average annual snowfall is 4 to 5 inches with rainfall for the year averaging 57.64 inches.

Population

In 2000 the population of Pontotoc County was 27,425. The city of Pontotoc contained 5,253 population in 2000.

Churches

There are more than 100 churches in Pontotoc County. These represent houses of worship for 13 Protestant Denominations and one Catholic Church.

 

Library

The Pontotoc County Library was built and dedicated on June 13, 1976. The building serves as headquarters for the Dixie Regional Library System serving the three counties of Pontotoc, Calhoun, and Chickasaw. In September 1987, the region owned over 85,000 volumes of books and audiovisuals.

Weekly story times are held throughout the year on Thursdays for pre-school children. A dial-a-story service is available at all times at the number 489-7777. Annual summer library programs are provided every year for both preschoolers and school children.

Handicap facilities and services are available. In addition, interlibrary loan services are also provided with the assistance of the Mississippi Library Commission.

   

Schools

There are three fully accredited public school systems in the area: North and South Pontotoc Attendance Centers and the Pontotoc Municipal Separate School System. All three public schools are Level 5 schools. Available for all the school students in the county is the Pontotoc Ridge Technical Training Center providing business and technical training.
